II. Wrong: Dear Sir/Madam!
I am writing to you to complain about my accommodation problem in London.
Two weeks ago in Moscow I received the letter from your agency which directed me to the dormitory which is situated in the Old London near the College where I take now the primary English course.
But when I arrived in London and found this dormitory with difficulties because it was already a midnight I found out that there was not a free room for me. Young Lady in reception service explained me that the letter was valid only before 12 p.m. Why did you not warn me about this condition?
I slept in the dormitory lobby and in the morning the manager suggested me to live in other dormitory, I agreed because I had not another choice.
The dormitory where I live now is very nice, it is a new comfortable building, but I have two important problems. Firstly, the dormitory is situated very far from the College and I need to use subway and bus daily and public transport in London is not so cheap. The second problem - the present dormitory is more expensive than I expected and I have not opportunity to pay more than I planned before my studying.
I ask you to resolve my problem as soon as possible and to keep all conditions of our agreement.
Sincerely, VL
What is wrong here:
1. Use of articles
2. Use of tenses
3. some words are misuses
Right: Dear Sir/Madam!
The reason I am writing to you is the accommodation problem I faced in London.
I take a primary English course at a college in Old London. Two weeks before my departure from Moscow I received a letter from your agency informing that a room for me had been booked in the dormitory situated in the vicinity of my college.
On my arrival in London it took me rather long to find the above mentioned dormitory and I got there at about midnight. I found out that there were no rooms available. Also, a young lady from the reception service explained that my letter was valid only till 12 p.m. I wonder why you have not warned me about this beforehand.
I spent the night in the dormitory lobby. In the morning the manager offered me another dormitory and I agreed as I had no other choice.
My present accommodation is very nice, located in a new comfortable building, but there are two major problems. First of all, the dormitory is situated very far from the college so I have to travel by underground and by bus each day, and, as you know, the public transportation is not so cheap. The second problem is that the present dormitory is more expensive than I expected, and I don't have the opportunity to pay more than I had planned before my study has commenced.
I would ask you to solve my problem as soon as possible in order to meet all the terms of our agreement.
Sincerely yours,

VL
III. You have been accepted at Moreton College, a residential college at your new university. You are expected to arrive on 25 February to attend the college orientation session, but you will not be able to arrive by that date.
TASK: Write to the Principal of the College explaining why you will be delayed, expressing your concern about missing the orientation session, and asking what you should do.
Wrong: To the Principal of Moreton College
Dear Sir/Madam!
I am a new student at the College and I have the instruction to arrive on 25 February to attend the college orientation session. I regret to inform you that I will not be able to arrive by that date, because I have some objective actual reasons which were created before my acceptance at Moreton College.
I have a long-term agreement with my current employer which was signed two years ago. The agreement will stop to operate on 28, February. I have tried to discuss this problem with my boss, but his decision was hard and I can only leave my work on this date. In contrary I will not receive my last salary and bonus and missing it would be very important for my future student life.
According to these reasons I have not the opportunity to be in the orientation session and I need to warn you about this and if it is possible for you to inform me what my next action should be in this case. Can I receive the course list by e-mail and do I choose the courses which I prefer before my arriving at the College? Must I announce my choice by mail at the nearest time or can I do it personally after my landing?
I am ready to accept all of your conditions and suggestions because my intentions to study at the College are very serious.
Also I ask to reserve a room for me in the student dormitory. I ordered this room two week ago and I hope that it will be no change because of my absence at the first session days.

I thank you for your attention and understanding in this matter.
Regards,
VL
What is wrong here:
"objective actual reasons... were created", "agreement ... stop to operate", "In contrary", "have not the opportunity", "it will be no change", etc. should be expressed better
Right: To the Principal of Moreton College
Dear Sir/Madam!
As a new student at your College I have the instruction to arrive on 25 February to attend the college orientation session.
I regret to inform you that I will not be able to arrive by that date due to personal circumstances that had originated before I was accepted at Moreton College.
I have a long-term agreement with my current employer signed two years ago. The agreement expires on 28 February. I tried to discuss this problem with my boss, but his decision was final, and I can leave my work no earlier than this date. Otherwise, I will not receive my last salary and bonus which are essential for my future expenses as a student.
Due to these reasons, I cannot attend the orientation session. I would kindly ask you to let me know what can be the possible solution of this problem and whether we can complete the necessary formalities via e-mail or fax, or it can wait till my arrival.
Also, I would ask to confirm the reservation of the room in the student dormitory. I placed a room booking order two weeks ago. I hope, my absence at the orientation session will not cause any change.
Thank you for your attention and understanding of this matter.

PART VIII

СОЧИНЕНИЯ - COMPOSITIONS

«За» и «Против» - “For” and “Against”

Plan

1. Introduction (State the problem)

2. Arguments “for”.

3. Arguments “against”

4. Conclusion

Example. (short)

For and against keeping animals in the Zoo.

There are a lot of zoos in the world. One can go there and see wild animals and birds there. Children and adults like going to the zoo. But the problem of zoos is widely discussed nowadays.

On the one hand it is good that we have zoos, because due to them we can preserve some disappearing species of animals and birds. Also people can see with their own eyes wild animals which they will never see in their life. And certainly scientists can study such animals and do some discoveries.

But on the other hand very often animals are kept in bad conditions because of the lack of financing. So the dwelling conditions and food supply are very poor. Also because of low salaries people working at the zoo don’t take proper care of animals and they fall ill and die. The next bad thing is that often zoos organize exhibitions in other cities and animals suffer from the change of climate.

Taking all factors into consideration we can come to the conclusion that existence of zoos have its merits and drawbacks.

Рассуждение – Reasoning

Plan

1. Introduction (State the problem)

2. Express your opinion and give reasons for it.

3. Give other people’s arguments and explain why they are wrong.

4. Conclusion.

Example (short)

Review of history.

Nowadays it is very popular to review history of our state in order to show how bad it was in the past.

To my mind it isn’t correct because history tells us about good and bad events influencing on the course of our history and the development of our society. People are brought up on different ideals and examples and it’s difficult for them to change their thinking. Also such a review leads to destruction of different historical monuments

Some people think that it is correct because history of our country is full of lie and some events have never taken places and some people have never lived and have never done this or that deed. To my mind it’s not right to reveal everything to the world and to show how silly people were that they believed everything they were told. I think that in this case no nation will respect us because we don’t respect ourselves either our history or our ancestors.

So we mustn’t review history. We can only find some new facts and data.
Exercise 1. Comment on the following statement:

Many people think that we should explore space and visit other planets. However, some people say that space exploration is a waste of time and money.

What can you say for and against exploring space and visiting other planets?

Exercise 2. Comment on the following statement:

Some people believe that teenagers today are generally rude, lazy and badly behaved. Other people, however, think that teenagers have a bad reputation for no reason.

Do you agree that teenagers are often criticized unfairly?
Exercise 3. Comment on the following statement:

Fast food is very popular and saves time for busy working people. However, many experts say that it is not completely healthy.

What can you say for and against fast food?
Exercise 4. Comment on the following statement:

Some people believe that animals without owners should have the right to live in the streets in cities. Others say that they could be dangerous and should be collected and found new homes, or even put down.

Do you think that stray animals should be allowed to live in the streets?
